Patriot League M-F Athletic Cross Country Runners of the Week Announced (9.10.19)

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Boston University claimed three of the four Patriot League M-F Athletic Cross Country Runner of the Week awards when the League office released honors on Tuesday.
 
Terriers’ senior Paul Luevano received his third career Patriot League M-F Athletic Male Runner of the Week honor after taking home the individual title at Colgate’s Harry Lang Cross Country Invitational. BU freshman Foster Malleck was the top freshmen finisher in Hamilton, N.Y., placing 10th, to earn rookie of the week honors for the first time.
 
Boston University senior Abigail Gugel picked up her first M-F Athletic Female Runner of the Week honor with a win in the seven-team, 90-competitor Harry Lang Cross Country Invitational field. Navy freshman Elizabeth Sullivan finished third, behind Gugel, to collect her second-consecutive rookie of the week honor.
 
Bucknell sophomore Emily Deschler, Holy Cross sophomore Joseph Leland and Navy junior Ben Cracraft all received an honorable mention for their performance last week.
 
FIVE PATRIOT LEAGUE TEAMS COMPETE AT HARRY LANG INVITATIONAL
Colgate hosted the Harry Lang Cross Country Invitational in Hamilton, N.Y. with Boston University, Bucknell, Lehigh and Navy all taking part from within the League. No. 12 Syracuse won the 6.4K men’s race with 31 points, in front of Navy (44), Boston University (68) and Bucknell (85). The Terriers won the 4.8K women’s race with 26 points, including the top two finishers in Gugel and sophomore Jessica Kellar. Navy finished third with 64 points, Bucknell placed fourth with 82 points and Lehigh rounded out the top five with 122 points.
 
HOLY CROSS COMPETES AT NASSANEY MEMORIAL ROAD RACE
The Holy Cross men’s cross country team finished fourth of 11 teams at the 8K Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Road Race. Leland was the Crusaders top finisher in ninth-place of the 128-runner field.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE M-F ATHLETIC MALE CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
Paul Luevano, Boston University, Sr., Los Angeles, Calif./Venice
*Luevano won the 6.4K men’s race at the Harry Lang Invitational at Colgate, besting the 84-competitor field with a time of 19:45.2
*The Los Angeles, Calif. native finished eight seconds in front of the second-place runner from Syracuse. *He led the Terriers to a third-place team finish behind No. 12 Syracuse and Navy.


PATRIOT LEAGUE M-F ATHLETIC FEMALE CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
Abigail Gugel, Boston University, Sr., Jordan, N.Y./Jordan Elbridge
*Gugel won the 4.8K women’s race at the Harry Lang Invitational at Colgate with a time of 17:11.2.
*She finished five seconds in front of her teammate Kellar in the 90-competitor field.
*The Terriers won the seven-team race with 26 points.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE M-F ATHLETIC MALE CROSS COUNTRY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Foster Malleck, Boston University, Fr., Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary’s
*Malleck placed 10th in the 6.4K men’s race at the Harry Lang Invitational at Colgate with a time of 20:35.2.
*He finished first among all Patriot League freshmen at the Harry Lang Invitational and was BU’s second individual to cross the finish line.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE M-F ATHLETIC FEMALE CROSS COUNTRY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Elizabeth Sullivan, Navy, Fr., Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth
*Sullivan placed third in the 4.8K women’s race at the Harry Lang Cross Country Invitational at Colgate with a time of 17:24.4.
*She was the top freshman finisher and has placed among the top three in both of her collegiate cross country races. 
 
HONORABLE MENTION
Ben Cracraft, Navy, Jr., Northville, Mich./Northville
*Cracraft led Navy with a sixth-place finish at the Harry Lang Invitational with a time of 20:07.3 on the 6.4K course. Navy finished second in the team standings behind No. 12 Syracuse. 
 
Emily Deschler, Bucknell, So., Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic
*Deschler finished sixth in the 90-competitor field at the Harry Lang Invitational with a time of 17:39.7, helping Bucknell to a fourth-place finish.
 
Joseph Leland, Holy Cross, So., Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial
*Leland finished ninth in the Nassaney Memorial 8K race with a time of 25:49.1.
