CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — The Patriot League honored American junior Kelly McCaddin with the Rockin' Refuel® Performance of the Week award after she helped the Eagles advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
The Eagles (34-2) made history as the first Patriot League team to capture a victory in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 win over Georgia (22-10) in last Friday's first-round match at Cameron Indoor Stadium on the campus of Duke University. American won by set scores of 25-21, 25-13 and 25-11.
A day later, American advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 3-0 victory over No. 16 seed and 14th-ranked Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium by set scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-22.
The wins set up a showdown today in Lincoln, Neb., between the Eagles and No. 1 seed and defending national champion Texas.
Against Georgia, McCaddin had 10 kills in 15 attempts with just two errors. In their win over Duke, McCaddin had another stellar offensive effort, posting 10 kills on 21 tries with only one error (.429).
“It’s incredible," American's Kelly McCaddin said on advancing to today's match with the Longhorns. "We made the tournament my freshman year too and had an early exit [in 2011]. We were a young team and we knew then that we were going to have something special over the years and this is that year.”
