Two-time Herald-Mail Washington County Volleyball Player of the Year Sara Rishell wasted little time making an impact at American University.

Thrust into a starting spot as a freshman on the Eagles’ extremely young squad, Rishell made the most of her opportunity. She led American in kills per game (3.15), blocks per game (1.03) and hitting percentage (.317) to be named the Patriot League Rookie and Player of the Year.

“It was a great season,” Rishell said. “I couldn’t hope for anything more.”

Anything except a successful run in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. American (23-10), which won the Patriot League tournament for the 10th time in 11 years, will face Delaware (20-12) in the first round on Friday at 7 p.m. at Penn State. The winner will likely face the Nittany Lions in the second round Saturday.
