CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - One reigning Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, a former winner and six Academic All-League selections highlight the list of eight student-athletes who earned Capital One Academic All-District recognition earlier this month in the sports of men's soccer, women's soccer and volleyball, it was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
All eight earned first-team honors and are on the national Academic All-America ballot.
To be eligible for the Capital One Academic All-District team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player on their team.
Four of the eight are in the sport of men's soccer, with Bucknell and Navy each placing a pair on the All-Academic Team in District 2. The list was comprised of Bucknell senior Brendan Burgdorf and junior Joe Meyer, along with Navy senior Eric Wootten and junior Zach Davis.
A pair earned first-team honors in District 2 in women's soccer - Bucknell senior Meghan Fitzpatrick and Navy senior Brittany Fruin.
The list of eight was rounded out by Army sophomore Mary Vaccaro, who garnered first-team Academic All-District honors in District 1, while American senior Rebecca Heath was named to the first team in District 2.
Vaccaro was named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in volleyball, becoming Army's second such honoree and first since 2008. She helped guide the Black Knights to their 14th consecutive appearance in the Patriot League Tournament, and finished the season with 974 assists and an average of 9.55 per set. Her Academic All-League and All-District honors were the first of her collegiate career. She has a 3.90 GPA majoring in kinesiology.
Heath was the 2011 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in volleyball, and was named to the Academic All-League and All-District squads for the second straight season. A graduate student in the anthropology department at American, Heath missed a portion of this season due to illness but still played in 18 of her team's 32 matches. She has a 3.86 GPA, and is a four-time Academic Honor Roll designee.
Burgdorf was Bucknell's top offensive player in 2012, and helped guide the Bison to the fourth seed in the Patriot League Tournament. A Hermann Trophy candidate to start the season, Burgdorf finished with three goals and five assists for 11 points. He has a 3.54 cumulative grade-point average as a physics major, and garnered his second straight first-team Academic All-District nod this month.
Meyer carries a 3.97 GPA as a mechanical engineering major at Bucknell. He appeared in all 20 games for the Bison, with two goals and one dish for five points. Meyer spent most of his season in the midfield, but transitioned to defense late in the year.
Davis appeared in all but one Navy match in 2012, and was a significant contributor to a Mids' defense that placed a pair on the All-League squad. The junior oceanography major has a 3.35 GPA at the Naval Academy. He's appeared twice on the League's Academic Honor Roll.
Wootten was a third-team Academic All-American a season ago, and could be on his way to another similar honor. He garnered Academic All-League honors at the end of the regular season, and played in all 17 of the Mids' contests in 2012. The senior boasts a 3.84 GPA as an honors systems engineering major.
Fitzpatrick was named to the Academic All-League and Academic All-District squads on the same day earlier this month. A management major with a 3.98 GPA, Fitzpatrick garnered her second straight Academic All-District accolade. Her naming to the All-District squad extended Bucknell's streak to eight straight seasons with at least one such honor in women's soccer. She played in 14 of the Bison's 19 contests this season.
Fruin was named to the Academic All-District 2 team for the second straight year, and was also a member of the Academic All-League squad in 2011. She played in 22 contests this season, helping the Mids finish 19-2-1 after hosting the Patriot League Tournament before falling 1-0 to second-seeded Colgate in the finals.
