Bethlehem, PA- Lehigh's stellar freshman class continues to pile up the honors, as Michelle Schwendenmann was named Patriot League Freshman of the Week Monday. This is the second time she has won the award this season, trailing only teammate Allison Jack in that category. All told, four different Lehigh players have now been recognized for player or freshman honors.
Schwendenmann had her best week as a Mountain Hawk yet, posting a double-double in a 3-0 win over Holy Cross with 11 kills and 11 digs. Then, in a 3-0 win over Army to clinch a playoff berth, Schwendenmann blasted her way to a career-high 21 kills in just three games. For the week, she averaged 5.3 kills per game. She has now reached double figures in kills in nine straight matches, a team high on the season.
Head coach Patrick Nicholas has had a front-row seat all season for the impressive debuts of his freshman class. "What Michelle has come in and done is just amazing," said Nicholas. "Allison Jack we knew would play a big role because she is our setter, but Michelle has surpassed our every expectation. She deserves so much credit for learning a new position and playing it so well. They both should be up for all-league honors when all is said and done."
Schwendenmann is also moving up the career charts for kills in a season at Lehigh. Her current total of 342 is tied for 17th best all-time, and has an outside chance to crack the top-ten by season's end.
The team travels to Wagner on Wednesday night for its last non-conference match, and then finishes up the regular season on Friday night at Lafayette. Both matches are set for 7:00 starts.
