CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The field of four for the 2012 Patriot League Volleyball Tournament was finalized Friday night thanks to Lehigh's four-set victory over Holy Cross at Grace Hall in Bethlehem. The Mountain Hawks clinched their third bid to the four-team tournament in the last four years and join American, Army and Colgate in the field.
It's the same group of teams that made the 2011 tournament, though the seeds and host will be different.
While Friday night's results settled the field of four, two of the four seeds are still to be determined, although the tournament matchups are set.
Colgate had wrapped up hosting responsibilities last weekend, so Friday's four-set loss at American did nothing to jeopardize the Raiders' seed. But it did add to the momentum of the Eagles, who have won seven straight League contests, while assuring them no worse than the third seed.
Army dropped the first set before rallying for a 3-1 win at Lafayette Friday. The Black Knights clinched no worse than the No. 3 seed with a win, with Lehigh locked in as the fourth seed.
The 2012 Patriot League Volleyball Tournament begins Saturday, Nov. 17 with two semifinal contests. No. 1 Colgate hosts fourth-seeded Lehigh at 3 p.m., while American and Army will battle in the No. 2 vs. No. 3 matchup at 6 p.m.
Saturday's results will determine who wears the home colors in the 2 vs. 3 contest. An American win over Bucknell would seal up the second seed for the Eagles, while a loss plus an Army victory against Lehigh would give the Black Knights the No. 2 spot.
