Lehigh's Angelika Kopacz
Jan. 11, 2012
At first, Angelika Kopacz ’12 didn’t think volleyball was for her. She was in ninth grade, and her father was pushing her to try out for the school team in Rutherford, N.J., where they’d settled after he brought the family to the United States from their native Poland when she was 3.
“Dad wanted the best for us and thought there would be some opportunities in the United States,” she says. At that moment, the opportunity was volleyball.
“He was very big on sports and played volleyball himself at a club,” Kopacz says. She’d played with him at the club for fun but didn’t enjoy competition during middle school. “I couldn’t pass or serve very well,” she says.
It was not an auspicious start for a player who has gone on to rack up four years of accolades and awards with the Lehigh women’s volleyball program.
