Volleyball Defeats Sacred Heart, 3-0, For First Win Of 2005

Fairfield, Conn. - Sophomore Christine Strawson (Torrington, Conn.) tallied her second double double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Sacred Heart, 3-0, on Wednesday evening. The Crusaders won by scores of 30-25, 30-27, 30-27, giving Holy Cross its first victory of 2005. The Crusaders are now 1-3, while the Pioneers fall to 0-1.

Holy Cross had four players record double figures in digs, including freshman Molly Anderson (Weston, Conn.) who had career highs in digs with 17 and service aces with two, while she was also second on the team in kills with eight. Senior captain Caitlin O'Callaghan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with seven kills and 10 digs, and sophomore libero Katie Fitzpatrick (Queensbury, N.Y.) played solid defense with 11 digs.

Junior setter Chrissy Fanning (East Amherst, N.Y.) kept the offense going with 28 assists, while junior Valerie Mora (San Antonio, Texas) had four kills with no errors and seven digs. Sophomore Meagan Merinder (Andover, Mass.) was solid at the net with two solo blocks.

The Pioneers were led by Samantha McMillan who had a triple double performance with 10 kills, 18 assists and 12 digs. Heather Brooks and Brenda Bailey each chipped in with eight kills, while Michelle Clark had 19 assists.
 

 

The Crusaders return to action when they travel to Cambridge, Mass., to participate in the New England Challenge on Friday and Saturday, September 9-10, hosted by Harvard. On Friday, Holy Cross will take on Rhode Island at 4:00 p.m., while on Saturday the Crusaders will face Boston College at 4:00 p.m., and Harvard at 7:00 p.m.
