Mary Wieder was sure her softball playing days were over after Lehigh was eliminated from the 2006 NCAA Tournament, but her love of the game brought her to Italy this summer. The four-time All-Patriot League selection is currently playing with Bussolengo's club team near Verona.
''For me, it has been a wonderful experience,'' Wieder said. ''I enjoy traveling and being able to experience other cultures. Living in Italy for four months with an Italian family and playing with all Italian teammates has allowed me to learn the Italian culture and language. Also, being in Europe, I have had the opportunity to travel and see some terrific sights.''
Wieder has played every minute of the season as Bussolengo's catcher and is one of the Italian League's offensive leaders, batting.410 with five doubles, six triples and 17 RBIs in 20 games.
