WEST POINT, N.Y. -
The Army softball team had two players named to the 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Northeast Team with pitcher Morgan Lashley and outfielder Amanda Nguyen selected for second-team honors.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and Lashley and Nguyen are among the 363 players comprising the 10 regional teams. Each is eligible for selection to one of three 2012 NFCA Division I All-America teams.
It is the fourth postseason award of the season for Lashley, who set Patriot League history with her selection as Pitcher and Rookie of the Year, along with earning first-team all-league honors. The freshman right-hander dominated the circle during a record-breaking season, shattering school and league marks for wins (33), innings pitched (327), appearances (56), games started (51) and games completed (37). She also broke Army's single-season record for strikeouts (237), which lists third in the conference.
Lashley, who closed out the spring with a record of 33-16 and 2.25 earned run average, continues to rank among the national leaders in wins and shutouts. In the latest NCAA release, she lists second in wins for the second straight week after holding down the No. 1 spot twice previously. The native of Davidson, N.C., is also 10th in shutouts (11). She fashioned a 36-inning scoreless streak during the season, fired a complete game one-hitter and posted a game-high nine strikeouts.
Nguyen, a two-time Patriot league first-team selection as an outfielder, stroked a .363 batting average at the No. 2 spot in the batting order. She recorded a team-high 70 hits, equaling the mark she set last year setting a school single-season record. She also led the team for the second straight year in stolen bases (19), while listing second in runs scored (36). Nguyen has ranked among the national leaders in sacrifice hits per game throughout the season and currently lists 12th (0.29).
Nguyen ranks second on Army's career batting chart (.372), third in stolen bases (46) and 10th in runs scored (77).
It is the first time since 2009 that an Army player has been selected for All-Region honors, and the first time that two Black Knights were selected in seven years dating back to 2005. Lashley is the third Army pitcher to earn this honor and first since Shauna Evans was chosen in 2002. Nguyen is the ninth outfielder to cop all-region honor and first since Nikki Posey was picked in 2006.
It is the fourth time Army has had two players recognized (2000, 2002, 2005, 2012) among its 12 players earning 15 all-region certificates. Army Hall of Famer Nicki Robbins is the only player to repeat, earning first-team honors all four years (1999-2002).
The 2012 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at 4 p.m. CDT, on Wednesday, May 30, on NFCA.org.
