Lehigh's Jennifer Colquhoun
May 8, 2012
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Lehigh senior Jennifer Colquhoun was selected as the 2012 Patriot League Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned one of 10 spots on the sport's Academic All-Patriot League Team, it was announced on Tuesday. Colquhoun becomes the first student-athlete in Patriot League history to win the honor in three consecutive seasons.
Lehigh also led the way with three student-athletes on the Academic All-Patriot League Team, which is in its second season. Senior Julie Fernandez and junior Rosie Roessel joined Colquhoun on the list. Bucknell placed senior Meredith Dixon and sophomore Mallory Lyons on the squad, while Holy Cross features senior Camille Trainer and sophomore Alex Gustafson. Rachael Duval (Army), Jennifer Ortega (Colgate) and Amy Gebhardt (Lafayette) each represent their schools.
The awards are voted on by the Patriot League's softball sports information directors, who can not select their own student-athletes. Colquhoun, Fernandez, Roessel, Duval and Ortega all repeat on the Academic All-Patriot League Team after making the inaugural list last season.
Colquhoun has stood out as one of the top players in the Patriot League throughout the 2012 season. She led all players with a .533 batting average during League action, and her .442 mark for the year is just percentage points behind Fernandez for the League lead. Colquhoun leads all players with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs, and has been named Patriot League Player of the Week a record-tying three times. She earned the Patriot League Player of the Year award on Tuesday, and the shortstop joined the list of four-time All-Patriot League selections when she was named to the first team.
Colquhoun's accolades for her work off the field are just as impressive. She was named to her third consecutive Capital One Academic All-District Team last week, receiving first-team honors for the second year in a row. Colquhoun carries a 3.77 cumulative grade-point average as a Biochemistry major at Lehigh, where she is a multi-year member of the Dean's List and a recipient of the school's faculty Athletics Council Academic Award. Colquhoun has also been honored with the Lehigh Class of 1904 Scholarship Award and the Lehigh Athletics Distinguished Achievement Award.
Colquhoun participates in Lehigh's community outreach C.O.A.C.H program as well as the Howard Hughes Medical Institute SEA (science education alliance). She has been an NFCA Academic Scholar and two-time recipient of the Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar Award.
Colquhoun earns Lehigh's eighth Patriot League Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, and fourth consecutive after Lisa Sweeney also won the honor in 2009. Colquhoun is the only honoree who has won the award multiple times.
Six of the 10 selections to the Academic All-Patriot League team were also honored with All-League spots for their play on the field. Colquhoun and Fernandez each earned their fourth-career All-Patriot League citation with a spot on the first team, where they were joined by Roessel. Dickson, Ortega and Gustafson were all second-team All-Patriot League picks.
Each of the student-athletes has put together an impressive resume off the field as well. Fernandez is one of 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, and the four-time first-team All-Patriot League selection also maintains a 3.33 grade-point average while majoring in Behavioral Neuroscience. Roessel completes Lehigh's honorees as she holds a 3.77 GPA as a Mathematics major. Bucknell's Dickson (Accounting, Economics/3.58 GPA) and Lyons (Undeclared/3.39 GPA) each have impressive credentials along with Holy Cross' Trainor (Sociology/3.29) and Gustafson (Biology/3.22 GPA). Representing their schools with equally outstanding achievements are Army's Duval (Art, Philosophy & Literature/3.202), Colgate's Ortega (Political Science/3.24) and Lafayette's Gebhardt (Biology/3.22).
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
