CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Lehigh senior Rosie Roessel was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in softball and headed up the 11-member Academic All-League team, it was announced Wednesday by the League office.

The academic awards were voted on by the League’s softball sports information directors who could not cast a ballot for their own student-athletes.

Roessel picked up the League’s most prestigious honor after also being named first-team All-Patriot League earlier in the day. A native of Fairport, N.Y., Roessel enters the Patriot League Tournament batting .367 with the 21 steals, the League’s second-highest total, and 39 runs scored, the fourth-best tally. During League play Roessel led all players with a .474 batting average, while scoring 17 runs, driving in four and stealing a League-best 11 bases. She is a three-time All-League selection, with two first-team laurels to her credit.

Roessel has shined in the classroom as well with a 3.80 cumulative grade-point average as a mathematics major at Lehigh. Last week she was named a Capital One First-Team Academic All-District selection, and will be up for national Academic All-America consideration this month. She is making her third appearance on the Academic All-Patriot League team, and has been a multi-year member of Lehigh’s Dean’s List and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. A two-time NFCA All-Academic Scholar, Roessel has participated in Lehigh’s Student-Athlete Mentors and Emerging Leaders programs while also serving on its Student-Athlete Council Alumni Relations Committee. She’s earned several awards at Lehigh, including its University Class of 1904 honor, the Student-Life Leadership Award and the Undergraduate Merit Award.

Roessel is one of four student-athletes who were both named All-League and Academic All-League in softball on Tuesday. Joining her were Bucknell sophomores Cydnee Sanders and Kristen Zahn, and Lehigh sophomore Emily Bausher. Sanders is an anthropology major with a 3.58 GPA, and Zahn owns a 3.40 majoring in accounting and financial management. Bausher is an earth and environmental science major with a 3.60 GPA. Sanders, Roessel and Bausher all earned first-team All-League laurels, and Zahn was a second-team selection.

Bucknell led with three selections on the Academic All-League squad, with senior Cassie Greenhawk joining teammates Sanders and Zahn. Greenhawk is an environmental studies major with a 3.44 GPA.

Colgate and Lafayette both placed two on the academic team. Senior Emmie Dolfi and junior Eileen Ornousky represent the Raiders. Dolfi has a 3.26 GPA as a mathematics and geography major, while Ornousky majors in history with a 3.32 GPA. The two Leopards to earn Academic All-League honors were senior Jordan Parsons, a government and law major with a 3.69 GPA, and junior Amy Gebhardt, who owns a 3.38 GPA majoring in biology.

Army and Holy Cross rounded out the squad with one selection apiece. Sophomore Ali Cleinmark (3.405 GPA, kinesiology major) represented the Black Knights, while junior Alex Gustafson (3.28, biology) was named to the team from the Crusaders.

Eight of the 11 members of the team will be competing in this week’s Patriot League Softball Tournament, which is set for Thursday-Saturday, May 9-11 from Lehigh’s Kaufman Field in Bethlehem, Pa. The top-seeded Mountain Hawks will open the tournament Thursday against No. 4 Colgate at noon, while second seed Army battles No. 3 Bucknell at 2:30 p.m. Three games are scheduled for Friday and the championship will be determined Saturday.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
