Patriot League Announces Academic Awards in Softball

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Bucknell junior Cydnee Sanders was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in softball and headed up the 12-member Academic All-League team, it was announced Tuesday by the League office.

The academic awards were voted on by the League's softball sports information directors who could not cast a ballot for their own student-athletes.

A native of Magnolia, Texas, Sanders enters the Patriot League Tournament batting .464 with the 41 runs scored and 26 RBI in 45 games for the Bison. The batting average ranks sixth nationally among Division I players and Sanders is tied with Boston University's Jayme Mask for runs scored among Patriot League players. Playing shortstop and batting in the three-hole, Sanders is also a perfect 8-for-8 in stolen base attempts.

In the classroom, Sanders has a 3.65 grade point average majoring in Anthropology/Sociology. A 2013 Academic All-Patriot League selection, Sanders has been a Bucknell University Dean's List student for all five semesters and is a 2013 NFCA Scholar Athlete All-America honoree.

Sanders is one of three Bison players on the Academic All-League squad, joined by junior Kristen Zahn and sophomore Amanda Fazio. Zahn, a 2013 Academic All-Patriot League selection, carries a 3.30 GPA in Accounting and Financial Management, while Fazio is recognized in her first year of eligibility and boasts a 3.61 GPA in Environmental Studies.

Lehigh also has three players on the All-Academic team led by sophomore third baseman Morgan Decker, the 2013 Patriot League Rookie and Player of the Year, junior pitcher Emily Bausher and sophomore second baseman Alexis Watanabe. Decker, who was named to the District I Capital One Academic All-District team on Thursday, has a 3.64 GPA in Behavioral Neuroscience. Bausher, a member of the 2013 Academic All-Patriot League team, carries a 3.52 GPA in Earth and Environmental Science and Watanabe has a 3.80 GPA in Molecular Biology.



Boston University and Lafayette each have a pair of players recognized on the Academic All-league team. The Terriers senior outfielder Jayme Mask, a District II Capital One Academic All-District team member, has a 3.41 GPA in Biology & Psychology and senior Chelsea Kehr has a 3.66 GPA in Speech-Language Pathology. Mask was a member of the 2013 America East All-Academic Team. The Leopards are represented by sophomores Allison Brown and Bryn Gornick. Brown has a 3.31 GPA in Mathematics and Gornick has a 3.3 GPA in Chemical Engineering.

Holy Cross senior Alex Gustafson makes the Academic All-league team for the third consecutive season. A Biology major, Gustafson carries a 3.31 GPA. The final member of the 2014 Academic All-Patriot League team is Army sophomore Alyssa Strobehn. The West Valley, Utah native boasts a 3.794 GPA in Mathematical Sciences.

Nine of the 12 members of the team will be competing in this week's Patriot League Softball Tournament, which is set for Thursday-Saturday, May 8-10 from Lehigh's Kaufman Field in Bethlehem, Pa. The top-seeded Mountain Hawks will open the tournament Thursday against No. 4 Army at noon, while second seed Boston University battles No. 3 Bucknell at 2:30 p.m. Three games are scheduled for Friday and the championship will be determined Saturday.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
