HAMILTON, N.Y. - Junior catcher Mary Wieder cracked two home runs and drove in seven runs to lead Lehigh to a Patriot League doubleheader sweep over Colgate Saturday at the Eaton Street Field. Lehigh won the opener 7-1, before coming from behind to take a 4-3 decision in the nightcap.
Lehigh (29-7 overall, 14-0 in the Patriot League) remains undefeated in league play, while Colgate falls to 15-14 overall and 7-5 in the league.
In the opener, Lehigh took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Wieder's two-run single off Colgate starter Kelsey Nordstrom (Salina, KS).
Colgate scored its only run in the second inning when Nichole Rawson (Palmdale, Calif.) led off with a home run to left centerfield. It was the fourth home run of the season for Rawson.
The Mountain Hawks scored three times in the third inning, when Wieder hit the first of her two home runs. The three-run blast was her first of the season, scoring Jessica Young and pinch runner Megan Conrad.
Lehigh's final two runs came in the seventh inning on a two-run double by Julie Sterrett.
Emily Ling (14-5) was the winning pitcher for the Mountain Hawks with a complete-game effort. She allowed three hits, one run, walked six and struck out seven. Nordstrom (8-6) was the losing pitcher giving up eight hits, walking five and striking out six.
In the nightcap, Lehigh took a 1-0 lead in the third inning Taryn Hanley's RBI single that scored Stephanie Palmieri. The Raiders tied the contest in the fourth inning on Dorothy Donaldson's (Lakeland, Fla.) fourth home run of the season, and 39th of her career.
Lehigh came back to go ahead 2-1 in the sixth inning when Sterrett scored on a fielding error by the Raiders. Colgate, however, rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame for its first lead of the day, 3-2. Kim Olmstead (Spring Hill, Fla.), who led off the inning with a double to right center, scored on Erin Hanna's base hit, and later in the inning Donaldson came home on Erin O'Keefe's (Millersville, MD) bases loaded single.
That set the stage for Wieder's second home run with one out in the seventh. Katherine Wegert led off the inning reaching on a fielding error, and advanced to second on Hanley's sacrifice bunt. Wieder then hit a high drive over the center field fence for the winning runs.
Kate Arico (W, 5-2) was the winning pitcher for the Mountain Hawks in relief of starter Heather Hamasaki, while Ling, who worked a perfect seventh inning, picked her second save of the season.
Kate Howard (Wheaton, Ill) (7-8) was the losing pitcher for the Raiders. She allowed seven hits, two earned runs, walked three and struck out one.
Colgate and Lehigh play another doubleheader on Sunday at the Eaton Street Field at 12 noon.
