WEST POINT, N.Y. -
Freshman right-hander Morgan Lashley fired a two-hit shutout and Army capitalized on five hits and a pair of errors to score all five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-0 victory over Iona in a non-league game Tuesday afternoon on a picturesque day at the Army Softball Complex.
Army picked up its sixth straight win in moving to 27-15 following its sixth shutout and second in the last three games. Iona, a member of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, slipped to 21-19.
Lashley (23-11), the Patriot League's reigning Pitcher of the Week after breaking Army's single-season record for wins over the weekend, struck out three batters and did not issue a walk facing just two over the minimum en route to her sixth straight win.
After being touched for a leadoff double in the top of the second, Lashley retired 15 straight batters. After yielding her second hit to the first batter she faced in the top of the seventh, Lashley retired the side.
Iona starter Sarah Jackson kept Army off the scoreboard over the four innings she pitched throwing a one-hitter. She held Army hitless over the first three innings before yielding a leadoff single to Amanda Nguyen in the bottom of the fourth inning. While Nguyen moved around on a stolen base and wild pitch, Jackson retired the side on three straight strikeouts with two looking en route to fanning five and issuing one walk.
Alyssa Maiese (9-9) took over the circle in the fifth, and after Reanna Johnson greeted her with a leadoff single to right field, she got out safely on a double play and infield popup.
Army battered Maiese in the sixth inning breaking open a pitcher's duel as the Black Knights benefitted from five hits, two fielding errors, a hit batsman and wild pitch in pushing across five runs, just one earned.
With one out, Ortenzo reached on an error by the shortstop. Nguyen beat out an infield hit and Alex Reynolds loaded the bases on a bunt single. A throwing error by the catcher trying to pick off Ortenzo at third allowed her to score and moved Nguyen and Reynolds up a base. Alexis AuBuchon struck out swinging and Nguyen scored on that play when AuBuchon ran to first base.
With two outs, Reynolds crossed on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead. Marina Northup was hit by a pitch and gave way to pinch runner Ashton Wolf, who crossed on right fielder's two-base error after misplaying Reanna Johnson's single. Alex Gaff's single to left center field delivered Johnson for the final run as Army sent 10 batters to the plate in posting its first win over the Gaels since 2008, snapping a three-game losing streak.
The Black Knights, opening a five-game home stretch today, have a stern challenge this weekend hosting league rival Lafayette in a four-game series with first pitch Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. Defending champion Lehigh is in first place with an 11-1 mark with Army and Colgate at 9-3 and tied for second place. Lafayette is 5-7 and in fourth place after taking a pair of games from the Raiders over the weekend.
