Center Valley, Pa. - Another year of stellar Patriot League women's soccer has come to an end, and the players and coaches have surpassed numerous milestones and achieved a number of accomplishments. Army sent outgoing Head Coach Gene Ventriglia out in style with its first Patriot League Championship in 15 years and earning its first NCAA Tournament berth. Three Patriot League women's soccer players were named CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans, while two players were named to NSCAA/adidas All-Region teams. Navy goalkeeper Lizzie Barnes ended her career as the Patriot League leader in goals-against average and was named to the First-Team All-Senior All-America Team.

Patriot League Women's Soccer CoSIDA Selections
The Patriot League had three women's soccer student-athletes named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams. Army's Elizabeth Betterbed and Sarah Goss and Navy's Lizzie Barnes were all selected CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine First-Team Academic All-Americans. This was the second Academic All-American selection for both Goss and Barnes, and the first for Betterbed.
Dervarics, Moeller Named To NSCAA All-Region Teams
Bucknell forward Jennifer Dervarics and Navy defender Shelly Moeller were named Second-Team Mid-Atlantic Region honorees. Dervarics is the 2008 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and led the League in goals and points, while Moeller is the 2008 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year. Moeller helped anchor a Navy defense that went 5-0-2 in Patriot League play this season.
Record-Setting Career
Navy's Lizzie Barnes ended her career atop the Patriot League career goals-against average list at 0.68 and is fourth all-time in career shutouts with 28. The senior also helped Navy finish in the top-15 nationally in goals-against average (#12, 0.605), shutout percentage (#12, 0.591) and save percentage (#8, 0.865) this season.
Barnes Named To Lowe's All-Senior All-America Team
Navy senior goalkeeper Lizzie Barnes, a finalist for the 2008 Women's Soccer Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, was named to the First-Team All-Senior All-America Team. The All-Senior All-America Team is based on the cumulative results of NCAA Division I coaches and national media and fan balloting for the award, which honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in the classroom, community, character and competition.
Joining Barnes on the All-Senior All-America First Team are: 2008 Women's Soccer Lowe's Senior CLASS Award winner Kerri Hanks of Notre Dame; Yael Averbuch of North Carolina; Jenae Gibbens of California State University, Fullerton and Brittany Bock of Notre Dame.
Barnes previously won the 2008 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year awards.
Team Notebooks
American The Eagles ended their season with an overall record of 5-10-4 and 2-2-3 in Patriot League play. American's Friederike Engel and Olivia Heditsian earned All-League designations and will return next season.
Army The Black Knights earned their first NCAA Tournament berth, but lost to No. 16 Virginia, 2-0, in the first round. The Black Knights bid adieu to longtime Head Coach Gene Ventriglia, who retired at the end of the season.
Bucknell The Bison ended their season at 11-6-3 after tying Army in the Patriot League Tournament, with the Black Knights advancing 5-4 on penalty kicks. Senior forward Jennifer Dervarics led the League in points and goals, and was named Offensive Player of the Year for her performance this season.
Colgate Colgate fell 1-0 to Navy in overtime in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals, ending their season with a 7-11-1 overall record. Six Raiders were named to the All-League Team this season.
Holy Cross The Crusaders ended their season on a good note, beating Lafayette 4-0 in their final home game. Holy Cross ended the season 4-14-1 overall and 2-4-1 in Patriot League action. Freshman Katherine Donnelly was named Rookie of the Year.
Lafayette The Leopards finished the season 2-14-2 overall and 0-7-0 in Patriot League play.
Lehigh Lehigh finished the regular season 6-10-1 overall and 2-5-0 in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks upset Army 2-0 in their final regular season game.
Navy Navy lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to archrival Army in the Patriot League Championship match. Senior Lizzie Barnes was named both Goalkeeper and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while junior Shelly Moeller took home Defensive Player of the Year honors. The Mids finished their season 15-4-3 overall.
