Center Valley, Pa.—Three Patriot League student-athletes were named 2009 ECAC Division I Women’s Soccer All-Stars. Navy seniors Beth Reed and Shelly Moeller and American junior Friederike Engel were all named to the second team.
Engel was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year in 2009, becoming just the second player from American to win the award. Engel anchored a defensive unit that allowed just 0.89 goals per game. Engel and the Eagles held their Patriot League foes to just five goals. Engel also produced a goal and an assist while playing 18 regular season games. She also received First-Team All-Patriot League recognition.
Moeller was named a First-Team All-Patriot League selection, marking the fourth straight year that she received All-Patriot League honors. Moeller was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week a record 11 times, including three times this season. She led a Navy defensive unit that allowed just 16 goals all season and seven in Patriot League play.
Reed finished the 2009 season ranked 10th in the nation in save percentage (87.5). In her first year as the team's starting keeper, Reed allowed a League-low 0.67 goals per contest, while posting a Navy senior class record nine solo shutouts on her way to earning 2009 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year honors. In addition, Reed also became the first of Navy's 58 Academic All-Americans to receive the top Academic All-America award for a specific sport, as she was named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Women's Soccer Academic All-American of the Year.
Both American and Navy reached the Patriot League Tournament semifinals this season. The Eagles finished the season with an 11-10-0 mark and advanced to the Patriot League title game, while Navy closed the year with a 14-5-2 record.
