Center Valley, Pa.- Army's Elizabeth Betterbed and Sarah Goss and Navy's Lizzie Barnes have all been selected CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine First-Team Academic All-Americans, the organization announced Tuesday. This was the second Academic All-American selection for both Goss and Barnes, and the first for Betterbed.
Goss and Betterbed are the first Army women's soccer players to both make the Academic All-American First Team in program history. Senior midfielder Goss, a 2007 Academic All-America Second Team member, is a mechanical engineering major with a 4.06 grade-point average. Goss is also a 2008 Second-Team All-Patriot League selection. Junior defender Betterbed is also a mechanical engineering major, and carries a grade-point average of 4.23. Betterbed was selected to the 2008 Second-Team All-Patriot League for anchoring a stifling Black Knight defense. The two combined to lead Army to its first NCAA Tournament berth in program history after winning the Patriot League title earlier this month. Goss was named Tournament MVP.
Barnes, a 2006 First Team Academic All-American Selection, is the second Navy player to earn First Team honors twice; Nicole Aunapu first accomplished the feat in 1997 and 1998. The senior net minder is a computer science and information technology major with a 3.86 grade-point average. A national semifinalist for the 2008 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and the Patriot League Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Barnes led the League and is tops in Navy history with a 0.65 goals-against average. The Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year is also the Mids' career leader with 29 shutouts.
