Army to Play No. 2 Seed Virginia in NCAA Tournament

Nov. 10, 2008

Center Valley, Pa.- The 2008 Patriot League Women's Soccer Champion Army Black Knights will face the Virginia Cavaliers in the first round of the NCAA College Cup, it was announced on Monday. Virginia, the No. 2 seed in the UCLA region, will host the Black Knights on Friday at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va., at 5 p.m. The winner of the Army/Virginia game will play the winner of the West Virginia/Princeton in the second round match at noon on Sunday.

Army (12-5-3, 4-1-2) is making its first NCAA appearance in program history. The Black Knights defeated Bucknell and defending Patriot League Champion Navy on their way to winning the program's first Patriot League title since 1993.

Virginia (13-4-3, 6-3-1) was eliminated from the ACC Tournament Semifinals on Friday after losing a shootout with Virginia Tech, 2-1. The Cavaliers are making their 15th-straight and 21st-overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Since the League received its first NCAA automatic bid in 1997, Patriot League teams are 2-11 in the tournament. In 2004, Colgate defeated Arizona, 1-0, in the first round of the tournament before falling 4-0 to Connecticut. In 2006, Navy tied William and Mary, 0-0, and advanced 5-4 on penalty kicks to the second round. The Mids lost to North Carolina, 4-0, in the second round.

The Patriot League is 0-2 against the ACC in the NCAA Tournament, with Colgate losing 1-0 to Maryland in 2002 and Navy losing to North Carolina, 4-0, in 2006.
