Center Valley, Pa.Top-seeded Colgate claimed its League-best 11th Patriot League Women’s Soccer Championship, but not without a fight from second-seeded American. Sophomore Monica Jensen broke a scoreless tie in the 108th minute, giving the Raiders a 1-0, double-overtime victory over the Eagles.

Making their 14th appearance in the Patriot League title game, the Raiders won their first Patriot League Championship since 2004. Colgate outlasted an American squad that was making just its third championship appearance.

American out-shot the Raiders by an 11-8 margin, as each team placed four shots on goal. Patriot League Rookie of the Year Ashley Walsh made four saves, including a key save in the second overtime. Walsh stopped a shot by American forward Kelsey Brasher in the 105th minute, keeping the game scoreless. Three minutes later, Jensen fired a shot from 20 yards out that slipped past the defense and into the near corner.

Colgate senior Jillian Arnault, who recorded five shots during the tournament, was named the Patriot League Tournament MVP. Joining her on the Patriot League All-Tournament Team were teammates Calista Victor, Liz Polido and Walsh.

American goalkeeper Arianna Efstathiou made three saves, including a crucial stop in the 102nd minute. Brasher kept pressure on the Colgate defense by firing seven shots, including two shots on goal. Both were named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team. Also named to the All-Tournament Team from American was freshman midfielder Michelle Montilio.

Rounding out the Patriot League All-Tournament Team were Bucknell’s Amanda Citron and Kayla Yee and Navy’s Kelsey Learned and Brittany White.

Colgate, which has now won seven straight games, will advance to the NCAA Tournament. Selections and pairings will be announced on ESPNews tomorrow at 8 p.m.
