Nov. 7, 2007
The top two seeds in this weekend's Patriot League Tournament, American and Bucknell, had a combined total of 14 selections to the 2007 All-Patriot League Teams, it was announced on Wednesday. The Eagles led the way with eight student-athlete selections, while the Bison turned in six, including four on the first team. Army, Colgate, Lehigh and Navy each had three student-athletes receive recognition to round out the two teams. Due to ties in voting, the Second-Team All-Patriot League roster is made up of 15 players, while the First-Team All-Patriot League is comprised of the normal 11 players.
American turned in an undefeated regular season in Patriot League play, finishing 4-0-3 on the year. The Eagles had three First-Team All-Patriot League honorees, including forward Kelsey Brasher, midfielder Friederike Engel and defender Annette Scott. Brasher, a sophomore, earned her first post-season recognition after leading the Patriot League in both goals per game and points per game during the 2007 season. She racked up a career-high 13 goals and 29 points, both of which were good enough for second in the League. Brasher has been named Patriot League BRINE Offensive Player of the Week twice this season. Engel was one of two freshmen to be named First-Team All-Patriot League after an impressive debut in American red and blue. The newcomer played in 15 games this season, totaling 30 shots and two goals, one of which was a game-winner. She was also part of a defensive unit that only surrendered 15 total goals during the 2007 season, and was named Patriot League BRINE Rookie of the Week once this season. Scott was named to an All-Patriot League team for the fourth time in her career, but this is the first time that her name has been on the first team list. Scott led a defensive unit that was outstanding all year, surrendering only four goals in League play and 15 overall. The senior recorded one assist on the season as well.
Bucknell had the most first-team honorees with four. Forward Jennifer Dervarics, midfielder Kelliann Doherty, defender Nicole Marotta and goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton each received first-team recognition. Dervarics, who was a second-team honoree in '06, was impressive on the offensive attack for the regular-season champs this season, finishing third in the League with 28 points, and tied for third with 11 goals. Her six assists were also good enough to tie her for sixth in the League. She was named Patriot League BRINE Offensive Player of the Week once this season. Doherty was the second of two freshmen to be named All-Patriot League after a solid first year in Lewisburg. She finished ninth in the League in points with 15, and tied for eighth in goals scored with six. Doherty was named rookie of the week twice during the '07 season. Marotta, a junior defender who was also First-Team All-Patriot League in '06, led a Bison defense that allowed just 1.42 goals per game. She also recorded an assist on the season. Sutton earned her first All-League recognition after a solid year between the pipes. The sophomore keeper made 80 saves on the season, and posted four shutouts. She stepped it up in League play by earning a 0.84 GAA with only five goals against. Sutton was the Patriot League BRINE Goalkeeper of the Week a League-high four times this season.
Colgate had two first-team honorees, including three-time All-League selection Franny Iacuzzi. Iacuzzi, a senior forward, leaves Colgate with 110 career points and 46 career goals, both of which are on the top-10 career list in Patriot League history. Joining Iacuzzi on the first team was midfielder Jillian Arnault. The sophomore had three goals and four assists on the season for a total of ten points.
Lehigh's lone first-team selection was senior defender Michaela Pawlewicz. Pawlewicz, who was the 2005 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, was named to the first team for the third-consecutive season.
Navy forward Brigitte Fox rounds out the list of first-team selections, marking the second-consecutive year that the senior has been named to the First-Team All-Patriot League. Fox, who exploded for seven goals over her final two games, led the League with 14 total goals and 31 points.
The Second-Team All-Patriot League roster consists of 15 student-athletes, five of which came from American. Senior forward Krystn Hodge made the team after posting totals of 22 points and nine goals, good enough for fifth in the League in both categories. Midfielder Erin Stebbins earned her first All-League recognition. The sophomore scored one goal, and was part of a defensive unit that was strong all season long. The Eagles had two defenders on the second team, Olivia Heditsian and Irene Karistinos. Heditsian, a sophomore, and Karistinos, a senior, were two more parts of the defensive machine that was the 2007 American Eagles. Karistinos was named Patriot League BRINE Defensive Player of the Week twice during the '07 season. Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Wiggins was named to her first All-League Team. Wiggins, who played in 12 games this season, finished with an impressive 0.59 GAA and a record of 5-1-3.
All of Army's selections were named to the Second-Team All-Patriot League. Pia White, Sarah Goss and Geralyn Pedicino each earned their first post-season recognition after leading the Black Knights to the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. White, who was named Patriot League BRINE Offensive Player of the Week once during the season, finished with three goals and eight assists on the season. Goss, a junior, led Army on the year with 11 points and five goals scored. Pedicino, who earned Patriot League BRINE Defensive Player of the Week honors once this season, led a defensive-minded Army team that gave up only 15 total goals this season.
Bucknell had two second-team selections, both of whom have earned All-Patriot League status before. Senior forward Krista Lee Gentile earned All-League recognition for the fourth consecutive season. She finished the season with six goals and four assists for a total of 16 points. Sophomore defender Lauren Stoller earned her second consecutive All-League selection for her efforts this season.
Lehigh had two members on the second team as well. Senior midfielder Melissa Montalvo earned her first selection after scoring three goals this season for a total of nine points. She was named Patriot League BRINE Offensive Player of the Week once this year. Senior forward Jen Fetsick was named to her first All-League team after leading the Mountain Hawks with five goals this season.
The Midshipmen had multiple honorees on the second team again in 2007. Sophomore defender Shelly Moeller, who was a first-team selection in '06, was the leader of a Navy defensive unit that allowed just 18 goals this season, only four of which came during League play. Junior midfielder Julie Reynolds was a second-team selection for the second consecutive year. She scored two goals this season, and helped bolster Navy's strong defensive unit.
The final member of the second team was Colgate sophomore Jessica Bitsack. Bitsack, who was the 2006 Patriot League Co-Rookie of the Year, was tied for first in the League with seven assists this season.
