Annapolis, Md.- Navy senior Lizzie Barnes was voted the Patriot League Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced Thursday night at the Patriot League Women's Soccer Championship Banquet. Barnes is the first Navy women's soccer player to win the award since Kate MacFarlane won it in 2001.
Barnes, a computer science and information technology double major with a cumulative 3.86 grade-point average, is a member of the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II First Team. The senior is among the top five percent of her classmates and is No. 22 in Academic Order of Merit at the Naval Academy. Barnes is one of 10 finalists nationally for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes outstanding achievements in athletics, academics and community service.
The senior net minder has earned three Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week awards, and is fourth on the Patriot League and first on Navy's career shutouts list with 28. Barnes helped the Mids shut out six Patriot League opponents this season and 12 opponents overall while earning a League-low 0.66 goals-against average.
To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
