Bucknell junior co-captain Shannon Curd (Westtown, N.Y.) scored the first goal in Sunday's championship match, as the fourth-seeded Bison made history with a 3-1 triumph over third-seeded Army in the Patriot league Women's Soccer Championships. Curd was named the tournament's most valuable player after scoring twice in the tournament.
The game was scoreless before Curd tallied the first goal of the contest in the 61st minute. Army knotted the match at 1-1 with a goal from sophomore Jessica Congemi (Marlboro, N.Y.). In the 75th minute, Bucknell sophomore Krista Lee Gentile (North Haledon, N.J.) gave the Bison the lead for good with a goal, and senior teammate Kerry Fitz-patrick (Washington, D.C.) added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute to give Bucknell its second Patriot league title in women's soccer competition.
This marked Bucknell's first Patriot league women's soccer title since 2001. It also marks the first time in Patriot League history that the number four-seeded team won the League's women's soccer tournament. In Friday's semifinals against top-seeded and host Lehigh, Curd deciding tally in a shootout to help lift the Bucknell women's soccer team past the Mountain Hawks, 6-5 in penalty kicks. Army earned its trip to the final following a 1-0 triumph over second-seeded Colgate.
The pairings and locations for 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championships will be announced on Monday, Nov, 7.
