Navy Wins Patriot League Women's Soccer Championship
Nov. 5, 2006 Navy defeated Colgate, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon to win its second-ever Patriot League Championship. Despite Colgate leading in shots, 8-6, and in corner kicks, 7-3, the Raiders had trouble finding a goal. Patriot League Co-Defensive Player of the Year Navy's Shelly Moeller netted the only goal of the game in the seventh minute off an assist from Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year Meggie Curran. Navy goalkeeper Lizzie Barnes had two saves, while Raider keeper had a single save. The Patriot League Tournament team was announced at the end of the game. The Tournament team included Lehigh's Gina Lewandowski and Michaela Pawlewicz, Bucknell's Shannon Curd and Krista Lee Gentile, Colgate's Jessica Bitsack, Kiki Koroshetz and Kellen Kroll, and Navy's Lizzie Barnes, Shelly Moeller, Lauren Bresnahan and Julie Reynolds. The Patriot League Most Valuable Player was awarded to Navy's Shelly Moeller. With the title victory, the Mids earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament. NCAA selections will take place between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5.
