Center Valley, Pa.Navy senior goalkeeper Beth Reed was named the 2009 Patriot League Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced Wednesday by the Patriot League office. Reed is the second consecutive Navy goalkeeper to win the award, joining 2008 winner Lizzie Barnes. It marks the fifth time since 1997 that a Navy student-athlete has won the award.

Reed, a senior mechanical engineering major, owns a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average. She ranks second in overall order of merit among 1,064 midshipmen in the Naval Academy’s class of 2010. She has held the top ranking in her class in academic order of merit in five of six semesters at the Academy. She has been recognized on the Commandant’s List in all six semesters and has been on the Superintendent’s List five times. She is a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member. Reed was also named a First-Team Academic All-District Selection last week.

On the field, Reed is 14-4-2 as the Mids’ starting goalkeeper. She has started all 20 matches and possesses a 0.67 goals-against-average, which leads the Patriot League and ranks 35th nationally. She has allowed just 13 goals this season while recording nine shutouts. She also notched her first career assist in Navy’s 2-0 win over rival Army on Oct. 9.

To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor. The award is voted on by the Patriot League’s women’s soccer sports information directors.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
