Center Valley, Pa. –Patriot League women's soccer student-athletes were recognized for accomplishments in the classroom and on the field on Thursday, as six were selected to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams, including four First-Team honorees.
The Patriot League selections came in the University Division from District 1 and District 2, with student-athletes from Army, Colgate and Holy Cross placed in District 1 and those from Lehigh, Lafayette, American, Bucknell and Navy grouped into District 2.
Army and Navy led the way with two honorees apiece. Both of Navy’s selections were placed on the First Team, while Army had one First-Team selection. Bucknell and Colgate each had one selection, with Bucknell’s being on the First Team.
Navy placed Beth Reed and Shelly Moeller on the District 2 First Team. Reed, a senior mechanical engineering major, holds a 3.97 grade point average. As a goalkeeper, Reed has shut out 9 of the 18 opponents she has faced this season. She leads the Patriot League with a 0.61 goals-against-average. Moeller, a senior center back, has been named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week a record 10 times in her career, including three times this season. She holds a 3.54 GPA in honors oceanography.
Elizabeth Betterbed, a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, leads Army’s two honorees. Betterbed, a senior midfielder, holds a 4.23 GPA in mechanical engineering and was named a District 1 First-Team selection. She currently has a team-leading 10 points (three goals, four assists). Her teammate, senior defender Caitlyn Gallagher, was placed on the Second Team. Gallagher has played in all 18 of the Black Knights’ games this season, helping Army record seven shutouts this season. She holds a 3.65 GPA in engineering management.
Bucknell senior defender Lauren Stoller was named to the District 2 First Team. She has a 3.80 GPA in psychology. Stoller has started all 17 games for the League-leading Bison.
Colgate junior defender Kiki Koroshetz has maintained a 3.91 GPA in English. She was named to the District 1 Third Team. She has played in 12 games for the Raiders this season, her first since returning from Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form. First-Team selections are eligible for Academic All-American status.
