Jess Grupp was born at West Point and learned to appreciate the ways of the military in her frequent visits to the grounds of the U.S. Military Academy.
Yet, Grupp put her future in the hands of the U.S. Naval Academy after graduating from Monroe-Woodbury, and she would like nothing better than hearing the cheer "Beat Army'' when her soccer team plays the Black Knights Friday night with first place at stake in the Patriot League.
A large cheering section from Monroe-Woodbury is anticipated, and Grupp will have plenty of family on hand as well for the 7 p.m. match at West Point's Clinton Field.
"I am definitely excited,'' Grupp said Wednesday. "It will be a really good game. It will be good to play in front of my old team and friends and family.''
Grupp is a sophomore defender for Navy. She has appeared in all but one contest for the Midshipmen, who have allowed just 11 goals this season. Grupp has been bothered with a nagging back injury but feels fine heading into the showdown.
