Center Valley, Pa.--Navy continued its unbeaten run, starting its season with five wins and one tie. As a result, two Mids were honored with Patriot League weekly honors. Also receiving recognition were Holy Cross senior forward Shelby Stand and Colgate freshman goalkeeper Ashley Walsh.

BRINE Offensive Player of the Week (8.31.09-9.6.09)
Shelby Stand, Holy Cross Sr., F, Douglas, Mass. In her first game of the season, Stand scored both goals in the Crusaders' 2-1 victory at Manhattan, helping Holy Cross pick up its second win of the year. Stand now has 14 career goals and 35 career points.
BRINE Defensive Player of the Week (8.31.09-9.6.09)
Katelyn George, Navy So., D, Loveland, Ohio George played every minute in Navy's back-to-back shutouts of highly-regarded Dayton and Miami (Fla.). She helped the Mids to a scoreless draw against the Flyers, then assisted the game-winning goal in Navy's 1-0 win against the Hurricanes.
BRINE Goalkeeper of the Week (8.31.09-9.6.09)
Beth Reed, Navy Sr., GK, Indianapolis, Ind. Reed stopped all 19 shots on goal that she faced to record shutouts against two nationally prominent foes. She recorded a then-career-high eight saves against Dayton. She then topped that effort with 11 saves against Miami (Fla.). Reed was named to the Hurricane Cup All-Tournament Team.

Ashley Walsh, Colgate Fr., GK, Cicero, N.Y. Walsh helped the Raiders notch a 1-1 tie against Pac-10 foe Oregon, despite being outshot by a 36-6 margin. Walsh recorded a career-best 12 saves against the Ducks and assisted the Raiders' lone goal. She recorded five saves against Denver and held the Pioneers scoreless for 92 minutes before dropping a 1-0 decision in overtime.
Honorable Mention Performances Last Week
Mikaila Weaver, American So., D, Morris Plains, N.J. Scored the lone goal in American's 1-0 win against Richmond. Weaver has now notched game-winning goals in back-to-back contests.
Jill Dozier, Lafayette Fr., F, Fallston, Md. Registered her first career goal in the Leopards' 4-0 win over Delaware State. Added a goal and an assist in Lafayette's overtime loss to Loyola (Md.)
Lauren Mains, Lehigh Jr., GK, Scotch Plains, N.J. Posted back-to-back shutouts against LaSalle and Albany. Finished the week with 11 saves, including a seven-save effort against LaSalle.
Carissa Youker, Navy Jr., F, Potomac, Md. Scored the game-winning goal against ACC foe Miami (Fla.). Also produced the team's two shots against the Hurricanes. Was named to the 11-member Hurricane Cup All-Tournament Team.
Patriot League Notebook
Regional Risers Navy and American find themselves in the latest edition of the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic regional rankings. Navy climbed from seventh to third after winning the Hurricane Cup in Coral Gables, Fla. After losing its season-opener, American has won three straight contests and enters the poll ranked 10th.
2009 Patriot League Preseason Poll The United States Naval Academy was chosen to win the 2009 Patriot League Women's Soccer Championship in a vote by head coaches and sports information directors. The Mids received six first-place votes and 90 overall points, marking the third straight season Navy has been selected as the preseason favorite. Colgate, which garnered a League-best seven first-place votes, followed closely behind Navy, with 83 points. Bucknell received three first-place votes and was selected to take third place with 76 points. Defending Patriot League Tournament champion Army was picked fourth with 61 points, followed by American (50), Lehigh (39), Holy Cross (35) and Lafayette (14).
Matlack, Moeller Receive Preseason Awards Bucknell's Christa Matlack was selected as the Preseason Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, while Navy's Shelly Moeller received the nod for Preseason Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Matlack was a First-Team All-Patriot League selection last season. As a sophomore, she tallied eight goals and four assists. Moeller has been named Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season. She was named the 2008 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year as a junior after anchoring a Navy back line that led the Mids to the top Patriot League regular season record.
Betterbed Nominated For Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Army soccer standout Elizabeth Betterbed has been selected as a candidate for the 2009 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, based on personal qualities that define a complete student-athlete. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Patriot League Tournament The 2009 Patriot League Tournament will be held Friday and Sunday, November 6 and 8 at the site of the highest seed. The teams with the top four regular-season records will qualify for the Patriot League tourney.
Team Notebooks
American won its third straight game, a 1-0 triumph over the Richmond Spiders. Mikaila Weaver scored the only goal of the contest. She has notched the game-winning goal in back-to-back games. The Eagles are ranked 10th in the latest NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional poll. American will host Maryland on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
Army split its weekend contests at the Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The Black Knights claimed a 2-0 victory over Stetson before dropping a 3-0 decision to host Florida Gulf Coast. Deanna Clegge scored the game-winning goal against Stetson just 10 minutes into the match. The Black Knights will next be in action Friday at Saint Louis.
Bucknell is now 1-3 after beating UMBC and falling in double overtime to Duquesne. The Bison trailed UMBC 1-0 until the final five minutes of regulation, when Rosemary Walker and Brooke Stokes scored to stun the Retrievers. Freshman Kayla Yee assisted on the Stokes goal for her first collegiate point. Walker's goal was the first of her career. The Bison will host St. Francis (Pa.) on Wednesday.
Colgate picked up a tie and a loss at the Colorado Soccer Classic in Boulder. Freshman goalkeeper Ashley Walsh stopped 12 shots in the Raiders' 1-1 draw with Oregon. She made five more saves in Colgate's 1-0 overtime loss to Denver. The Raiders will look to improve upon their 1-2-1 record with a pair of weekend games. Colgate will host Syracuse on Friday before traveling to take on Marist on Sunday.
Holy Cross got two goals from senior co-captain Shelby Stand in the Crusaders 2-1 victory against Manhattan on Friday. On Sunday, Holy Cross was dealt its first defeat of the season, a 4-0 setback at the hands of local rival No. 16 Boston College. The Crusaders will next host Providence on Wednesday in Worcester.
Lafayette picked up its first win of the season with a 4-0 win over Delaware State. Also during the week, the Leopards were dealt losses by LaSalle and Loyola (Md.). Freshman Jill Dozier recorded her first career goal in the Leopards win over the Hornets. Lafayete will host Rider and San Jose State this week.
Lehigh did not allow a goal in two games last week. The Mountain Hawks played to a scoreless draw against LaSalle before claiming a 1-0 victory against Albany. Glynn Fitzer scored Lehigh's only goal of the week, notching the game-winner in the 89th minute against the Great Danes. Lehigh will host Cornell on Friday.
Navy is undefeated in six contests this season. The Mids have claimed five victories and one tie. Navy won the Hurricane Cup in Coral Gables, Fla. during the weekend, defeating host Miami (Fla.) and playing to a scoreless tie against Dayton. The Mids have shut out four of their first six opponents this season. Navy is ranked third in the latest NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional poll. the Mids will host a pair of teams from Virginia this weekend, battling James Madison and Liberty.
