The Mids enter the weekend with a 1-2 record on the young season. Navy's last contest was Tuesday night when the Midshipmen played host to No. 13 Minnesota. The Mids represented themselves well in the 25-18, 25-17, 25-11 loss to the Golden Gophers, which was the program's first match against a nationally ranked program in eight years.
Morgan State opened the 2009 season by dropping a trio of matches, but now enters the tournament on a two-match winning streak. The Lady Bears most recently posted a three-set sweep of Lehigh. Navy holds a 14-4 advantage in the all-time series with Morgan State, but the Lady Bears have won four of the last five meetings against the Mids dating back to the 1997 season.
Maryland makes the short drive from College Park with a 2-1 record on its ledger this season. The Terrapins started the year by picking up a pair of five-set wins over St. Bonaventure and Youngstown State before losing in three sets to Villanova. Maryland holds a 7-1 advantage in the series between the two programs.

The Mids checked in at No. 7 in this week's NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Rankings. Navy is the only Patriot League program to garner recognition in this week's regional polls. Dayton owns the top spot in the regional poll and is currently fourth among the team's receiving votes in the NSCAA National Rankings.
Navy has opened up with four-straight victories twice in the last-four seasons (also did so in 2006). A win or draw on Friday against Dayton would mark just the fourth-time in program history Navy has opened up unbeaten through its first five games (previously: 2002, 2003, 2006).
Dayton has started strong in '09 with wins over Loyola Chicago (1-0) and Middle Tennessee State (4-0), as well as a 1-1 draw with nationally-ranked Auburn. The Flyers went 15-6-1 (8-2-1) and advanced to the finals of the A-10 Championship a year ago. Eight starters return on this year's preseason favorite squad, led by three-time conference all star senior forward Mandi Bäck.

One of the most successful teams in NCAA history, Navy will begin its 89th season of competition on Friday night. Just four other teams have played more years than Navy (Yale 100, Penn State 98, Harvard 97, Stanford 94, Navy 88). In addition, Navy is one of 15 schools nationally to have recorded over 600 wins entering the 2009 season.
Navy's 2009 roster features 13 freshmen, three sophomores, four juniors and eight seniors. The Midshipmen return 10 starters and 12 letterwinners from last year's squad.
Saint Joseph's returns six starters and 19 letterwinners off last year's team that went 5-8-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the Atlantic 10, good for a 10th-place finish. Navy won last year's meeting, 1-0, on Sept. 12, in the rain in Philadelphia to maintain its perfect 5-0-0 all-time record against the Hawks.
