Mids Turn in Second-Straight Shutout, Defeat Binghamton, 4-0

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy freshman forward/midfielder Cassie Barbaresi (Bradenton, Fla.) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 38th minute, to lead the Midshipmen women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Binghamton Sunday afternoon at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Navy improves to 2-0 and for just the second time in the program's 14-year history, the Midshipmen have opened their season with back-to-back shutout victories.

"Our defense has been the backbone of our success for many years," said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "We went back to the basics during our preseason camp to emphasize the importance of playing solid defense.

"Across the board we have depth that we really haven't had before," added Gabarra. "We are able to substitute and not see a let down in play. That helps us wear the other teams down, especially when you play two games in three days."

In the early minutes of the contest, both teams tried to be the aggressor. The two teams combined for 13 first-half fouls before settling down.

Barbaresi scored her first-collegiate goal when she took a pass from fellow rookie Brittany White (Carmel, Ind.) and sent it sailing over Binghamton keeper Kristie Bowers' head from 15 yards out on the left side of the field. The goal gave Navy a 1-0 lead heading into the locker room and a 6-4 edge in the shots column.

The Mids scored nearly eight minutes into the second stanza when team captain Molly Burd (Englewood, Colo.) fed junior forward Brigitte Fox (La Mesa, Calif.) from mid-field. Fox dribbled the ball down the left sideline near the Navy bench before crossing the ball to White, who squared up to the goal and subsequently scored her first-collegiate goal.

Barbaresi fired in her second goal of the game in the 70th minute off assists from Fox and Meggie Curran (Silver Spring, Md.), and junior Kari Weniger (St. Petersburg, Fla.), who missed last year's Patriot League season after suffering a knee injury, scored the Mids' final goal of the contest in the 78th minute off an assist from starting midfielder Carey Young (Virginia Beach, Va.).

Fox finished the weekend with the game-winning goal on Friday and a pair of assists in Sunday's win.

"I really felt like Brigitte was outstanding today and dominated throughout the game," said Gabarra. "She is finishing scoring opportunities and placing the ball at will. It's been great to have her back after missing most of last season."

Defensively, sophomore Lizzie Barnes (New Orleans, La.) put together another flawless performance in goal where she has played nearly 166 minutes without surrendering a goal. Newcomer Beth Reed (Indianapolis, Ind.) saw her first collegiate action, playing the final 14:08 of the game and making a pair of saves.

The Mids return to action next Friday when they travel to Deland, Fla., to face Stetson. Game time is set for 7:00 pm. Navy will also face Jacksonville (Sunday, 5:00 pm) while in Florida.
