ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Junior forward Brigitte Fox (La Mesa, Calif.) scored in the 47th minute to lead the Navy women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Davidson in its season opener Friday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Mids, who are now 8-6 in season openers, improved to 5-2 in openers played in Annapolis.
The first half opened up with Davidson showing its speed and attacking ability, as the Wildcats outshot the Midshipmen 8-2 in the opening stanza and kept Navy on the defensive end of the field.
However, the Mids used up little clock in putting together their game-winning goal early in the second half. Senior forward Meggie Curran (Silver Spring, Md.) started the play with a pass to team captain Molly Burd (Englewood, Colo.) stationed on the right side of the box who then sent the ball to Fox streaking up the left-hand side. Fox got the ball, dribbled back and forth and tucked the ball just out of reach of Davidson keeper Bevin English 1:44 into the second half. For Fox, it was her first appearance in a Navy game since suffering a season-ending knee injury at Loyola Marymount just four games into the 2005 season.
Fox's goal, along with the more than 950 fans that came out to support the Midshipmen, helped boost Navy for the remainder of the contest. The Mids went on to outshoot the Wildcats 7-4 in the second half.
The game attracted 956 fans, the second-largest crowd to see a Navy's women's soccer game at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility and the sixth-largest crowd to see the women play in program history.
"Tonight's game was a positive way to start the season for our team," said 14th-year Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "We are a young team and I think as we gain game experience and begin to mesh, we'll be able to finish more of our scoring opportunities. I definitely saw some things that were positive signs for the future.
"I can't say enough about our fan support here at the Academy," added Gabarra. "That is one of the biggest reasons why we schedule as many home games as we do. The great support of our midshipmen and community gives us a home field advantage."
The Mids return to action Sunday when they play host to Binghamton at 3:00 pm. The Bearcats (0-0-1) tied Georgetown 2-2 in a hard-fought battle Friday afternoon at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
