Not long after being called up to train with the U.S. women's soccer national team on May 10, former Central Catholic and Lehigh University great Gina Lewandowski boarded a plane in Germany, where she plays professionally with FFC Frankfurt.
The only problem? It wasn't the plane she was hoping to board.
On the day she was expecting to return to the U.S., her German club told her that it was not going to allow her out of her contract for the two weeks of training, which could have included a match against China and a longshot chance at making the team that will play in the London Olympics next month.
Lewandowski was packed up with some place to go -- but that place was Lyon, France, not New York.
