Navy's Stimpson garners CRCA accolade
June 2, 2005 Navy women's crew coach Nicky Stimpson has been selected as the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year, it was announced Wednesday by the CRCA. This is the second-straight year Stimpson has garnered the honor. "Nicky is a great coach and making this award even better is that she is such a wonderful person," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. The award, which is voted on by the CRCA membership, is designed to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of assistant coaches for the spring season and is based upon the assistant coach demonstrating an outstanding commitment to their program, having a significant impact on their program's success and demonstrating a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach. "Nicky is involved in every aspect of our program," said Hughes. "Among many other areas, she coaches the freshmen eight and varsity four boats and handles our recruiting efforts. Two of the freshmen she recruited this year ended up rowing with our varsity boats. Despite their loss, her freshman boats still had a great season. "In a league where nearly every other program has multiple assistant coaches, Nicky is my only assistant. It is because of her can-do attitude that she is not only able to accomplish so much personally, but also help our entire program achieve our goals." Joining Stimpson as regional winners were Brown's Phoebe Murphy (New England), Ohio State's Robbie Tenenbaum (Central), Oregon State's Anne Kakela (West) and Clemson's Kelly Lynch (South).
