CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) released its postseason awards on Tuesday with 41 Patriot League rowers being honored as All-Region rowers or scholar-athletes.
Navy senior Katherine Ashton and Boston University junior Kelly Jackson received honors in both. Ashton was a Mid-Atlantic first team All-Region selection and Jackson was recognized on the Mid-Atlantic second team. Both Ashton and Jackson are also among 33 Patriot League student-athletes named a CRCA National Scholar-Athlete.
Candidates nominated for the All-Region teams are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coaches recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams' varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season.
Joining Ashton on the Mid-Atlantic first team are Bucknell juniors Amanda Chikowski and Andrea Seifert, Georgetown senior Ally Flinn and Boston University seniors Alexandra Gustafson and Lynn Ratte.
A pair of Boston University teammates join Jackson on the Mid-Atlantic second team. Senior Westanna Carleton and senior Coxswain Sarah Specht made the second unit from the Patriot League champion Terriers along with Bucknell senior Victoria Kielty.
Seven institutions that sponsor Patriot League Women's Rowing placed two or more student-athletes on the CRCA Scholar-Athlete list. Georgetown led the way with nine selections followed by MIT with seven.
In order to be a CRCA Scholar-Athlete a student-athlete (1) has met all eligibility rules as defined by her institution, (2) was in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility, (3) rowed in her institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event, and (4) the head coach of the student-athlete was a member in good standing of the CRCA as of May 1, 2014.
Student-athletes also must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career, through the fall semester/quarter for the current competition year.
