WORCESTER, Mass. — The Navy Midshipmen scored 35 points to claim the 2013 Patriot League Rowing Championship Friday at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.

The Mids, who won the varsity eight and second varsity eight races, won their second title and first since the Patriot League’s inaugural championship meet in 2005.

Navy will earn the League’s first automatic berth into the NCAA Division I Championship, which will race May 31-June 2 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.

Bucknell, which had won seven straight Patriot League titles prior to Friday’s race, scored 29 points to finish second, while Holy Cross tallied 23 to take third place on its home course. Massachusetts Institute of Technology dropped back one spot from its 2012 finish, scoring 20 points to land in fourth. Colgate (9 points) and Lehigh (8) rounded out 2013 standings.

As was the case in 2005, Mike Hughes was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year, and the Mids’ varsity eight boat was named the Patriot League Boat of the Year.

Navy also ended Bucknell’s seven-year winning streak in the varsity eight race, beating the Bison by nearly five seconds. In 2011 and 2012, the Mids led heading into the varsity eight race, but they weren’t able to hold on as the Bison forged comebacks in both championships.

Friday told a different story as Navy posted a time of 6:29.310 in the varsity eight race to win. Bucknell landed in second at 6:33.927 and MIT was third (6:36.952).

Navy also won the second varsity eight race with a time of 6:41.587, finishing ahead of second-place Holy Cross (6:50.601). Bucknell was third at 6:53.218.

In the first race of the day, the varsity four, Bucknell won with a time of 7:22.970 and Navy placed second at 7:30.756. Holy Cross earned another top three finish with a time of 7:35.537.
