CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy will begin its quest for a second consecutive Patriot League Women's Rowing Championship against an expanded field when competition begins Friday morning at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
The Mids emerged on top of the six-team field in 2013 to end Bucknell's run of eight straight titles. Boston University, Georgetown and Loyola University Maryland enter the fray this year as nine teams will compete for the 2014 crown. Navy edged newcomer Boston University atop the preseason poll of the League's coaches and sports information directors in March. The Mids and Terriers were followed by Bucknell, Georgetown, MIT, Holy Cross, Colgate, Lehigh and Loyola.
The 2014 Championships will feature two heats each for the varsity four, second varsity eight and varsity eight races. The top three finishers in each heat, regardless of time, will compete in the grand final with the remaining squads participating in a petite final. The schedule and lane assignments for each heat are listed below.
The event will be scored on a weighted scale, with nine points for the winner of the varsity four race, 18 for the second varsity eight and 27 for the varsity eight. The Patriot League Champion will be awarded to the school that accumulates the most total points in the three races. If there is a tie in final point total, the higher-place finisher of the varsity eight race is crowned Patriot League champion. Awards will also be given for Coach of the Year and Boat of the Year.
The Patriot League Championship gets started with the varsity eight heats at 8/8:10 a.m., followed by the second varsity eight at 8:20/8:30 and varsity four heats at 8:40/8:50. The grand finals will begin with varsity four at noon, second varsity eight at 12:10 and varsity eight at 12:20. The champion will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Rowing Championship.
Last season, at Lake Quinsigamond, Navy won both the varsity eight and second varsity eight to win the title. Bucknell finished ahead of the Mids in the varsity four race, but the two victories and one second place finish gave Navy 35 points to 29 for runner-up Bucknell. Holy Cross (23), MIT (20), Colgate (9) and Lehigh (8) rounded out the final standings. Holy Cross finished second in the second varsity eight race and third in the varsity four race last year.
Bucknell and Navy both enter the 2014 Patriot League Women's Rowing Championships coming off of strong performances. The Mids won the varsity eight by nearly five seconds at the EAWRC Sprints in Cherry Hill, N.J. earlier this month and also captured the varsity four race. The Bison second varsity eight were victorious in the finals last weekend at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.
