CAMDEN COUNTY, N.J. — The Bucknell University women’s rowing team won its seventh straight Patriot League Championship on Sunday, coming from behind for the second consecutive year to win at Cooper River Park.
Bucknell scored 34 points, winning the Varsity Eight (6:48.54) and the Varsity Four (7:54.67) races. The Bison’s win in the Varsity Eight erased a one-point deficit to Navy, which is what they had to do last year at Lake Quinsigamound in Worcester, Mass.
By winning the Varsity Eight race for the seventh straight year, Bucknell once again claims the Boat of the Year distinction that comes with that accomplishment. Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish earned his sixth Patriot League Coach of the Year honor in the last seven seasons.
Navy finished third in the Varsity Eight race to record a total of 29 points and finish second. Navy placed first in the Second Varsity Eight (7:04.50) to take the short-lived lead in the championship standings.
MIT had a strong showing, placing third overall with 25 points. The Engineers had a strong finish, placing second in the Varsity Eight race.
Holy Cross finished fourth with 20 points, and Lehigh (9 points) and Colgate (8) rounded out the Patriot League Championship.
The Patriot League Championship is scored on a weighted system. Points are greatest for the Varsity Eight race with totals of 18-15-12-9-6-3 by position, while the Second Varsity Eight is scored at 12-10-8-6-4-2 and the finishers in the Varsity Four race get scored 6-5-4-3-2-1.
Navy finished in second place for the seventh straight year. The Mids are the only other team to win the Patriot League Rowing Championship, claiming the inaugural title in 2005.
All-Patriot League honors will be announced next week, with the amount of honorees per team based on the finish in the Varsity Eight race.
