Navy's Hannon Named Patriot League Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Center Valley, Pa. - Navy senior Kerry Hannon was named the 2009 Patriot League Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced on Thursday. The Scholar-Athlete of the year award is voted on by the Patriot League's rowing sports information directors.

Hannon holds a 3.79 cumulative grade-point average as an applied mathematics major. She has previously been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll twice (2007 and 2008) and has been a two-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete. She was a 2008 ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-District selection. She has been honored four times on the Superintendent's List and six times on the Commandant's List. She ranks 84th in her class of 1,074 midshipmen in Academic Order of Merit.

Athletically, Hannon has been a four-year member of Navy's varsity eight crew. She has helped the Navy varsity eight boat post an 11-4 record entering the Patriot League Championshiop. She and her Navy teammates claimed the overall regatta trophy at George Washington Invitational earlier this month. During the fall, she was a member of the first-place crew at the Navy Day Regatta and Head of Occoquan Regatta.

To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.

The 2009 Patriot League Rowing Championship will be held in Camden County, N.J., on the Cooper River. Competition will take place on Sunday, April 26. The rowing championship is a full-field competition, including Patriot League rowing participants: Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lehigh and Navy.
