CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- The Navy women's rowing team was selected to finish first in the 2014 Patriot League Preseason Poll, voted on by the League's coaches and sports information directors.

The Mids, the defending Patriot League Champions, garnered 121 points and 9 first-place votes to edge Boston University (118 points, 8 first place votes) atop the preseason poll. Bucknell received the remaining first place vote and was tabbed for third with 96 points followed by Georgetown (89), MIT (71), Holy Cross (62), a tie between Colgate (35) and Lehigh (35) and Loyola (21).

The Patriot League Championship is scheduled to be held on May 16 on Lake Quinsigamound in Worcester, Mass. The Patriot League champion will earn a bid to the NCAA Rowing Championships, set for May 30-June 1 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.

In 2013 on Lake Quinsigamound, Navy scored 35 points to claim the championship, winning the Varsity Eight (6:29.31) and the Second Varsity Eight (6:41.59) races. The win ended Bucknell's seven-year stranglehold on the Patriot League title.

Navy coach Mike Hughes won his third Patriot League Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Mids to a 20th place finish in the NCAA Championships.

Boston University, who will be participating in the Patriot League Championships for the first time, was the Colonial Athletic Association champion in 2013 and finished in 18th place at the NCAA Championships a year ago. Georgetown and Loyola University Maryland will are also making an inaugural appearance in Patriot League women's rowing, increasing the field from six teams to nine.

Navy and Bucknell are the only two teams to win a Patriot League Championship. The Mids won in 2005 and 2013 and Bucknell won seven consecutive titles from 2006 through 2012.
