CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- The Bucknell Bison have been selected to win their seventh consecutive championship, earning the top spot in the 2012 Patriot League Women's Rowing Preseason Poll, announced Wednesday.
The preseason poll is voted on by the head women's rowing coaches and sports information directors in the Patriot League.
Bucknell earned 50 points in the poll, sweeping all potential first-place votes (10). Navy finished second with 40 points, earning a first-place vote, while Colgate was third with 31 points. Holy Cross (26), MIT (23) and Lehigh (10) rounded out the poll. MIT also received a first-place vote.
The Bison rallied from behind in 2011 to win their sixth championship in school history. Navy, which led Bucknell heading into the Varsity 8 race at the championship, is the only other Patriot League program to have won a rowing title.
Last season, the Bison trailed Navy by one point entering the varsity eight race, but won the final event of the day in a time of 6:54.2 to hold off Colgate (6:57.2) and the Mids (6:58.1). That victory gave the Bison 33 points, enough to hold off Navy (28) and Colgate (22) for the 2011 Patriot League title. Holy Cross (21), MIT (12) and Lehigh (10) rounded out the final standings.
The 2012 Patriot League Rowing Championships will be held on April 29 at Cooper River Park in Camden County, N.J.
