CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- The Bucknell women's rowing team was selected to finish first in the 2013 Patriot League Preseason Poll, voted on by the League's coaches and sports information directors.

The Bison, who enter the season in search of their eighth straight Patriot League Championship, garnered 50 points and 10 first-place votes to win the preseason poll. Navy, which nabbed a pair of first-place votes, was second with 41 points, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was third with 33 points. Holy Cross (27), Colgate (16) and Lehigh (13) round of the preseason poll.

The Patriot League Championship, which will be held on May 17, will return to Lake Quinsigamound in Worcester, Mass.

With the NCAA Rowing Championship bracket expanded from 16 teams to 22 for the 2013 championship, the Patriot League will earn an automatic qualifier this spring. The Patriot League champion will earn a bid to the NCAA Rowing Championships, set for May 31-June 2 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.

Last year, at Cooper River Park in Camden, N.J., Bucknell scored 34 points to claim the championship, winning the Varsity Eight (6:48.54) and the Varsity Four (7:54.67) races. The Bison's win in the Varsity Eight erased a one-point deficit to Navy -- the same fashion in which they won the 2011 championship at Lake Quinsigamound.

Bucknell earned the Boat of the Year distinction for the seventh straight year after winning the Varsity Eight race, and Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish earned his sixth Patriot League Coach of the Year honor in the last seven seasons.

MIT had a strong showing in 2012, placing third overall with 25 points, and Holy Cross finished fourth with 20 points. Lehigh (9 points) and Colgate (8) rounded out the Patriot League Championship.

The Patriot League Championship is scored on a weighted system. Points are greatest for the Varsity Eight race with totals of 18-15-12-9-6-3 by position, while the Second Varsity Eight is scored at 12-10-8-6-4-2 and the finishers in the Varsity Four race get scored 6-5-4-3-2-1.

Navy is the only other team to win the Patriot League Championship, claiming the inaugural title in 2005. In the seven years that followed, the Mids have finished in second place behind Bucknell.
