Bertine is "As Good As Gold"
Kathryn Bertine '97 ran cross-country and track and played softball in high school, rowed varsity for Colgate, competed professionally in figure skating, participated in elite triathlons, and attempted to make the 2008 Beijing Olympics in open water swimming, pentathlon, race walking, road cycling, rowing, team handball, and track cycling over a two-year period that took her to ten different countries. What could be better than earning a spot on a 2009 United States World Championship team? As Colgate University rowing alumna Lindsey Hochman now knows, winning a medal in your first year is even sweeter. Despite four solid years running distance for York Suburban's track and cross country teams, Katie Johnescu knew she wasn't going to run in college.
After all, the former Trojan will soon be a sophomore at Colgate, where the academics are challenging, especially for a biology major that hopes to go on to medical school. But, Johnescu still wanted to compete in sports as a freshman and decided to pick one she had never tried before when she walked on the rowing team. And she loves it. Still, that begs the question. Before coming to Bucknell, I had never rowed or been to a regatta, and I can count the number of times on one had I had been in a boat. The very first practice, I was introduced to "the loop," which is a run around the back of campus - around the soccer fields, up by the golf course, down by the baseball fields and back to the gym. As exhausting as it was, I definitely started bonding with the other girls after that. MORE [+]
