Johnescu Rowing Along At Colgate
Despite four solid years running distance for York Suburban's track and cross country teams, Katie Johnescu knew she wasn't going to run in college.
After all, the former Trojan will soon be a sophomore at Colgate, where the academics are challenging, especially for a biology major that hopes to go on to medical school. But, Johnescu still wanted to compete in sports as a freshman and decided to pick one she had never tried before when she walked on the rowing team. And she loves it. Still, that begs the question. Why rowing? MORE [+]

Bucknell Women's Rowing Journal - Lauren Rambo
Before coming to Bucknell, I had never rowed or been to a regatta, and I can count the number of times on one had I had been in a boat. The very first practice, I was introduced to "the loop," which is a run around the back of campus - around the soccer fields, up by the golf course, down by the baseball fields and back to the gym. As exhausting as it was, I definitely started bonding with the other girls after that. MORE [+]

Crew's A Thrill For Holy Cross Woman
Monika Mangsen remembers all those fun days she spent as a kid at her grandparents' house on Lake Quinsigamond, swimming, water skiing or just dangling her feet from the dock. "I'd watch the boats and be like, `What are they doing?' " Mangsen said, "and I'd always talk about it."
At the encouragement of her parents and her boyfriend, Mangsen decided to try it when she got to Holy Cross. MORE [+]

Follow This Leader
When her alarm clock goes off every morning at 4:45, senior Christine Porcaro climbs out of bed and gets ready for practice. She heads off to the Steiner/Steinberg Boathouse, completes the two-hour session and is then free to take on the rest of her day. Good thing too, because Porcaro has quite a busy schedule. In addition to being a captain in the Lehigh Rowing program, Porcaro has served as a gryphon for the last three years on Lehigh's campus, culminating with this year where she is the head gryphon. On top of all that, Porcaro has been involved with the theater and she maintains a 3.71 grade point average as a French major. MORE [+]
