EVANSTON, Ill. - Three different Northwestern women's lacrosse players scored three goals each to defeat Holy Cross, 19-7 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday at Lakeside Field.
Patricia Sutton (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Kristine Corkum (Ipswich, Mass.) scored two goals each while Amy Archambault (West Hartford, Conn.), Megan Fenton (Bridgewater, N.J.), and Ali Baird (Wilbraham, Mass.) added one goal each. Archambault had two assists.
The game was scoreless for the first 10:30 of the game until Northwestern scored on a free position shot and followed with five goals in the next four minutes to take a 6-0 lead. Archambault scored the first goal for the Crusaders with under 12 minutes left in the half to make it 6-1. Northwestern and Holy Cross exchanged the next two goals with Sutton scoring the second goal of the game for the Crusaders (7-2). After the Wildcats scored two more Fenton put one in the back of the net for Holy Cross (9-3) with just under four minutes to play in the first half. Northwestern scored one more goal to go into the break with a 10-3 advantage.
The Wildcats scored first in the second half to increase their lead to 11-3. The Crusaders responded with two goals, the first from Baird assisted by Archambault and the second from Corkum to make it 11-5. Northwestern scored the next four goals to gain a ten point lead with 15:40 remaining in the game. Sutton and Corkum scored their second goals of the game to cut the Wildcats lead to 15-7 with just under eight minutes to play in the game. Northwestern scored four more goals in the last six minutes of the game to win 19-7.
Senior goalkeeper Megan Orr had 20 saves on 49 shots for the Crusaders.
Holy Cross ends the season 13-6 after winning the Patriot League for the second consecutive season and making its second straight NCAA appearance.
