Holy Cross Downs American, 12-8, To Win Patriot League Women's Lacross Crown
Worcester, Mass. (Apr. 29, 2007) -- The number-one seeded Holy Cross women's lacrosse team won its second successive Patriot League title Sunday with a 12-8 triumph over third-seeded American Eagles in Worcester, Mass. Senior midfielder Patricia Sutton led the Crusaders with five goals and was named the Tournament MVP, while senior goalkeeper Megan Orr recorded 11 saves and broke the all-time Patriot League career saves record with 839. Junior attack Nikki Bolduc scored three goals while junior attack Amy Archambault and junior attack Kristine Corkum both recorded one goal and two assists. Meanwhile, Lauren Aksionoff finished with a team-high three points, coming off a goal and two assists, for the Eagles. American put away the first goal of the game, but Holy Cross returned the next goal as the two teams remained within one goal of each other for the first 26 minutes of play. The game was tied up three times before Holy Cross scored three straight goals to go into halftime with a 5-3 lead. The Eagles again put away the first goal of the half and cut the Crusaders lead to 5-4. Holy Cross kept the lead until American knotted the game at six and seven. Corkum netted the go ahead goal (8-7) with just over 15 minutes remaining in the second half. Holy Cross followed up with four unanswered goals from Archambault, Baird, Bolduc and Sutton, to take a five goal lead, 12-7, with 4:29 left in the game. American scored one more before the buzzer, but Holy Cross held on to win the Patriot League Championship (12-8) for the second time in school history. The Crusaders out shot the Eagles 34-23 and Holy Cross had 16 draw controls to American's six.
