April 24, 2012

Center Valley, Pa. - Bucknell sophomore Katelyn Miller was selected as the 2012 Patriot League Women's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned one of 13 spots on the sport's Academic All-Patriot League Team, it was announced on Tuesday. The awards are voted on by the Patriot League's women's lacrosse sports information directors, who can not select their own student-athletes.

American and Navy led all squads with four student-athletes selected to the Academic All-Patriot League Team. Seniors Paige Lin and Lauren Schoenberger and juniors Emily Burton and Kimberly Collins represented the Eagles, while juniors Jasmine DePompeo and Kathy Young, senior Kierstin King and sophomore Jill Coughlin made the squad from Navy. Miller was joined by classmate Lindsey Ferro for Bucknell, while seniors Katie Sullivan (Colgate) and Leigh Ann Torcivia (Lehigh) and junior Cammie Linville (Lafayette) represented their schools.

The Academic All-Patriot League Team is in its second season and features 12 student-athletes to equal the size of the sport's first-team All-Patriot League squad, with an additional honoree on this year's list due to a tie in the voting. Schoenberger, Lin, Colllins, Young, Sullivan and Linville all repeated as Academic All-Patriot League selections.

Miller, a midfielder who also earned second-team All-Patriot League honors, has enjoyed a strong season for the Bison. She heads into Tuesday's regular-season finale with 32 goals, nine assists, 32 ground balls, 46 draw controls and 22 caused turnovers on the season. She is third in the Patriot League in caused turnovers per game and fifth in ground balls per contest, and tied a school record with six caused turnovers on March 3 against George Washington.

Miller has excelled in her first three semesters in the classroom as a double major in Biology and Psychology. She has recorded a 3.91 cumulative grade-point average and made the Dean's List in every semester, while also earning a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll last year. Miller works as a student athletic trainer at Bucknell and will be doing research on cardiology and cholesterol at the University of Maryland Medical Center this summer. She also volunteers at Lewisburg Food Bank and Our Daily Bread, a homeless shelter in Baltimore, as well as with Do-Rak (Do Random Acts of Kindness) on campus. Miller serves as the women's lacrosse SAAC representative.

Miller becomes Bucknell's seventh Patriot League Women's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and third in the past four seasons after Alyssa DeLorenz claimed the honor in 2009 and 2011.

Seven of the 13 selections to the Academic All-Patriot League team were also honored with All-League selections for their play on the field. Burton, Collins, DePompeo, Young, King and Torcivia all made the first team, with Miller earning the spot on the second team.

Each student-athlete has also excelled in the classroom. For American, each student-athlete has notched a cumulative GPA higher than 3.7. Burton holds a 3.73 cumulative GPA as Psychology major, Lin has a 3.88 mark as an Interdisciplinary Studies (Science-Intensive) major, Collins carries a 3.71 GPA while majoring in Business Administration and Schoenberger has the same mark as a Psychology and Philosophy major. Navy's trio of DePompeo (3.38 GPA, Political Science), Young (3.60 GPA, Ocean Engineering) and King (3.37 GPA, Oceanography) all stand out in class in addition to their first-team All-League honors, while Coughlin carries a 3.73 GPA as an Oceanography major. Ferro has a 3.80 cumulative GPA as a Business Management major at Bucknell, Sullivan maintains a 3.57 mark while majoring in Economics at Colgate, Linville holds a 3.74 GPA as an Economics and Business major at Lafayette and Torcivia carries a 3.40 mark as a Psychology major at Lehigh.

Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
