Patriot League Women's Lacrosse Release - 3.31.08

March 31, 2008

American and Colgate remained atop the Patriot League standings, but it was the Bucknell Bison who made the most news last week. Their upset of Ohio State, coupled with two other victories last week, allowed sophomore Carol Donohue and freshman Alyssa DeLorenz to be named offensive player of the week and goalkeeper of the week, respectively. Colgate's Molly Carroll was tabbed as defensive player of the week for the third time this season, while Lehigh freshman Lauren Dykstra earned her fifth rookie of the week award, which ties the record.

Offensive Player of the Week
Carol Donohue, Bucknell So., A, West Babylon, N.Y.

Donohue helped lead the Bison to three victories last week, all of which occurred away from Lewisburg, Pa. The sophomore scored two goals and had one assist in a victory over La Salle to start the week. She then turned things up a notch for Friday night's stunner at Ohio State, tallying three goals and four assists. In Sunday's win at Robert Morris, Donohue had her second-straight seven-point game, as she recorded four goals and three assists.

Defensive Player of the Week
Molly Carroll, Colgate Jr., M, Swarthmore, Pa.

Carroll earns her second-consecutive and third-overall weekly award of the season following a strong performance in two games last week. In Friday's League win at Lafayette, the junior scored three goals and handed out one assist in the victory. In Sunday's game against nationally-ranked Oregon, Carroll scored two goals and led a defensive unit that held the Ducks to just 11 goals in the loss.

Goalkeeper of the Week Alyssa DeLorenz, Bucknell Fr., Garland, Texas
DeLorenz came up big in three wins last week for the Bison. The freshman recorded 40 saves for the week, including double-digit saves in all three games. She faced 100 shots for the week and 34 in the win over Ohio State, which included a game-saving stop in the last few minutes. She had a 0.494 save % in the three wins.

Rookie of the Week
Lauren Dykstra, Lehigh Fr., A, Mendham, N.J.

Dykstra earned her second-consecutive and fifth-overall weekly award following a five goal, one assist performance in Lehigh's League win over Holy Cross. Dykstra scored all of her goals during an 11-1 scoring spurt in the second half, which gave them the win.

Making A Splash
Two Patriot League teams made quite a splash on a national level this past weekend. On Friday night, Bucknell defeated previously-ranked Ohio State by a score of 18-17. On Sunday afternoon, Colgate came very close to upsetting No. 14 Oregon, but eventually succumbed to the visiting Ducks by a score of 11-9.

Newcomers
The Patriot League welcomes two new head coaches this year. Caline McHenry takes over at Bucknell, while Cindy Timchal will be starting her inaugural year as head coach at Navy. McHenry was a standout student-athlete at Duke University, where in 2005 she was a First-Team All-American and a semifinalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, which is awarded annually to the top player in the nation. Timchal enters her 26th season of coaching, after splitting the first 25 between Northwestern University and the University of Maryland. At Maryland, Timchal led her teams to seven-consecutive and eight overall national championships, and is currently the all-time wins leader in Division I history with 343.

All-Time Leader
Lafayette senior Madalyn Booth continued her assault on the record books after scoring three goals and recording five assists in two games last week. The senior now has 115 assists, which extends her lead on the Patriot League career list. Booth has also moved into seventh place on the career points list with 221, and sits just outside the top 10 career goals list with 116. Joining Booth in the hunt for the top 10 career goals list is Lehigh junior Sara MacIntyre, who recorded her 100th career goal in a win over Lafayette, and now has 108 for her career.

Quotable
"I've never seen a team come out of the locker room [at halftime] with so much energy. This was a total team effort, from the starters to the players cheering on the sidelines. It was just an incredible effort."
Bucknell Head Coach Caline McHenry after Bucknell's stunning win over Ohio State.

2008 Patriot League Tournament
The 2008 Patriot League Women's Lacrosse Championship will once again use the two-day format that gives a day of rest in between the semifinals and the championship game for the top four teams in the Patriot League. The tournament will be held at the highest seed on Friday, April 25 and Sunday, April 27.

Team Notebooks

American
The Eagles fell to an overall record of 5-6 on the season following a pair of non-League losses last week. American dropped a home game to No. 12 George Mason and also fell on the road in a close game at Stony Brook. Senior Jackie Lane led the way with six goals, two assists and 10 groundballs in the two contests. The Eagles return to action on Tuesday in their first-ever meeting with Navy.

Bucknell
The Bison had an impressive week last week, to say the least. Bucknell won three road games in the span of six days to move to 5-3 on the season. The biggest victory of the week came on Friday night when Bucknell went into Columbus, Ohio and escaped with an 18-17 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes had been ranked in the top 20 as recently as one week ago. Sophomore Carol Donohue led the way for the Bison, as she racked up nine goals and eight assists in the three games for a weekly total of 17 points. Rookie goalkeeper Alyssa DeLorenz made 40 saves in the three games to earn the win in each. Bucknell will host Drexel and Colgate this week.

Colgate

The Raiders will travel to Bucknell for a crucial League game this weekend.

Holy Cross
The Crusaders posted a record of 1-1 last week as they defeated Siena at home and dropped a road game at Lehigh. For the season, Holy Cross is undefeated at home, but has yet to win a game on the road. Senior Amy Archambault had a strong showing offensively, as she recorded seven goals in the two games, including four in the loss at Lehigh. The Crusaders return to action Wednesday at Yale.

Lafayette
The Leopards fell to 0-10 on the season following two losses last week against Sacred Heart and League-leading Colgate.
