Considering her track record, no one should be surprised that head coach Cindy Timchal has led the Navy women's lacrosse team into the NCAA Tournament just three years after the program was elevated to varsity status. Timchal started the Northwestern program from scratch and quickly built it into an annual playoff participant. It took all of three years for the Navy women's lacrosse program to vault from newcomers in the sport to Patriot League champions. Now, the Midshipmen need just a single victory to secure another program first -- a trip to the NCAA tournament. Navy (16-3) locked up the Patriot League tournament with an 11-9 victory at Lehigh on Sunday, a win that set off a celebration and set up a date with Northeast Conference champ Sacred Heart (14-4) on Saturday in Annapolis. In Rocky Point native Danielle Vivonetto, Navy's first recruit from lacrosse-rich Long Island, Cindy Timchal has found a keeper. A year after scoring a Navy freshman-best 31 goals, Vivonetto has racked up 50 goals this spring and has the Timchal-led Mids flying high at a program-best 13-2, including a 4-0 mark in league play. Erin Rawlick was struggling through plebe summer at the Naval Academy and questioning her desire to play college soccer when she received a phone call that lifted her spirits. It was from Steve Rawlick, who informed his daughter that he had just read a newspaper article announcing that Navy had decided to elevate women's lacrosse to varsity status and hired head coach Cindy Timchal away from Maryland to direct the transition.
