COLLEGE PARK- Junior Javiera Villagra (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) led the AU field hockey team to its first ever NCAA berth as she scored four goals against the Quinnipiac Cougars in today's NCAA Play-in game. Freshman Camila Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) assisted on three of her four goals.
From the 4-1 victory the Eagles will next move on to face second-seeded Duke in the first round of the Division I NCAA field hockey tournament on Saturday, Nov. 15.
"This is a great moment for the AU field hockey program," said Head Coach Steve Jennings. "I am proud of this team; we dominated the game from start to finish"
Villagra started the game out strong; scoring her first goal 15 minutes into the half off a rebound from a strong shot by Maureen Daniel (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa).
Although the Bobcats were able to tie the game up with nine minutes left, the Eagles dominated the first half, out shooting Quinnipiac 10-2.
As the second half started, Villagra and the rest of the AU offense continued to challenge the Bobcat defense as they took six of their 18 shots in the first six minutes of the period.
Villagra scored her second goal of the game 15 minutes into the half as Infante slammed the ball towards the goal off a penalty corner where Villagra was waiting to tip it in.
With 11:53 left to play, Villagra received a pass from Infante at the top of the circle where she skillfully dribbled past three defenders to put the ball in the back of the cage for her third goal of the game. Her fourth and final goal was made just three minutes later as she slammed the ball past the goalie; once again with an assists from Infante.
Leading the Eagles with 17 goals, Villagra and the rest of the AU field hockey team now look forward to their first trip to the NCAA tournament in school history.
