WASHINGTON, D.C. - American captured its third-straight Patriot League field hockey championship title with a 4-2 win over the No. 3 seed Holy Cross at William I Jacobs Recreation Complex on Sunday. The Eagles outshot the Crusaders, 16-5, improving their record to 19-1, while the Royal Purple ended their year 10-10.
For the second-straight year Denise Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago) was named Tournament Most Valuable Player, having scored two goals in the title game and recording an assist versus Lehigh in the semifinal match.
Co-Rookie of the Year Irene Schickhardt (Ludwigsburg, Germany/Schiller) opened scoring at 11:30 in the first half, while sophomore midfielder Maggie Hall (Annville, Pa/Palmyra) and Infante made it 3-0 heading into halftime. The Eagles' last goal of the day was Infante's second of the game, coming at 47:51.
Holy Cross junior forward Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown Area) broke up the shutout by scoring the Crusaders first goal of the game with less than eight minutes to go. She added in another in the waning seconds of the game, but it was not enough to move past the seventh-ranked Eagles.
American goalie Allison Fayfich (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded two saves, while Holy Cross goalkeeper Sony Kuhn (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) had six.
The Eagles will find out their NCAA tournament fate on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. The selection show can be seen on CSTV on DirecTV on channel 610 or at www.NCAAsports.com.
