WASHINGTON -
American University field hockey players Denise Infante and Alyssa Poorman earned Patriot League weekly awards for the fifth time this season, conference officials announced on Monday.
Infante earned Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for her performances against No. 8 James Madison University and Patriot League rival Lafayette. After registering an assist in the 3-1 loss to JMU, Infante led the Eagles to an 8-0 win over the Leopards. Besides recording her seventh assist of the season in American's victory over Lafayette, she also anchored a defense that allowed just one shot on goal in 70 minutes of action. The Eagles also surrendered just one penalty corner, in comparison to their eight. This was the third time this season AU held its opponent to one penalty corner or less (VCU-0, Northeastern-1, Lafayette-1). Infante also broke into the Patriot League's top-10 career assists list, tying with four other student-athletes for eighth with 24 career assists.
After registering her fifth shutout of the season and recording seven saves in action last week, Poorman was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week for the second straight week and fifth time this season. With a 1.14 goals against average, the sophomore goalkeeper ranks eighth in the nation. Her five shutouts also ties American for second in the nation in shutouts per game (0.47).
American University field hockey is 11-4-0 overall and ranks first in the Patriot League with a 3-0 record. The Eagles have now won 24-straight regular-season games against Patriot League opponents. AU returns to action on Wednesday evening, making the short trip to Towson to face the Tigers at 5 p.m.
